You previously synced songs using iTunes

If you previously synced music to your iPod using iTunes (or any other application) and sync the same songs using Windows Media Player, you may have duplicates of the songs on your iPod.

The behavior is by design. To identify songs, Windows Media Player assigns unique IDs to each song. If you use a different application to sync music to your iPod, the IDs may not be updated correctly, which causes Windows Media Player to sync a duplicate song.

To avoid having duplicate songs on your iPod, delete all music files from your iPod, and sync again using Windows Media Player. See the topic Format your iPod.
