MGTEK dopisp - Frequently Asked Questions

MGTEK dopisp FAQ

What is MGTEK dopisp?

MGTEK dopisp is a plug-in for Windows Media Player 11 that enables you to sync your MP3 music to your iPod directly from within Windows Media Player. Out of the box, Windows Media Player does not support the Apple iPod, or technically speaking, the Apple iPod does not support the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) standard, which would have made the iPod compatible with Windows Media Player. MGTEK dopisp closes the gap between the iPod and Windows Media Player by providing sync support for MP3 music files.

Does MGTEK dopisp replace Apple iTunes?

Yes. MGTEK dopisp supports the most important features of an Apple iPod, such as syncing music, playlists, and album art. Apple iTunes is not required in order to use MGTEK dopisp with Windows Media Player.

Which iPod models are supported by MGTEK dopisp?

MGTEK dopisp supports all current Apple iPods, in all sizes, and most firmware versions:

  • Apple iPod (3rd Generation)
  • Apple iPod Photo (4th Generation)
  • Apple iPod Video (5th Generation)
  • Apple iPod Classic (6th Generation)
  • Apple iPod Mini (1st and 2nd Generation)
  • Apple iPod Nano (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Generation)
  • Apple iPod Shuffle (1st and 2nd Generation)
  • Apple iPod Touch (up to firmware 1.1.4)
  • Apple iPhone (up to firmware 1.1.4)

The new Apple iPhone 3G and the iPhone/iPod touch firmware 2.0 are not yet supported.

Will MGTEK dopisp support upcoming or future iPods?

In order to support future iPods, the MGTEK dopisp software has to be updated. Whether it is technically possible to support a future iPod cannot be answered until the device is actually available.

What are the system requirements for MGTEK dopisp?

In order to run MGTEK dopisp, you need:

  • Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 11
  • iPod Touch and iPhone only: Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Quicktime (installed with Apple iTunes)

Does MGTEK dopisp support 64-bit operating systems?

MGTEK dopisp does run on Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Vista x64 under the 32-bit WOW compatibility layer. To use MGTEK dopisp, run the 32-bit version of Windows Media Player (this is the default player).

What does 'dopisp' mean?

Technically speaking, MGTEK dopisp is a Windows Media Service Provider. When development was started, the software was called 'ipodsp', which is short for 'iPod Service Provider'. Somebody suggested it may be a bad idea to have a registered trademark in a product name, so the letters were rearranged a bit. Before we could think of a better name, there were tens of thousands of web-pages that linked to the dopisp homepage, so I guess we are stuck with that name...
