18 September 2007: iTunes database protection is just a checksum
Good news. Apparently, the iTunes database protection turned out to be a rather simple hash checksum. Some smart people have figured out how to calculate the checksum, and we updated MGTEK dopisp to perform the checksum calculation. The software is currently being tested, and will be released soon.
14 September 2007: Apple decided to force users to use iTunes
With the introduction of the new iPods and iTunes 7.4, Apple is apparently trying to lock out other applications, such as MGTEK dopisp, in order to force people to use iTunes. The new iTunes database contains some sort of a hash or digital signature. If this signature does not match the contents of the database, the iPod does not display any music. It is currently unknown how this digital signature is calculated, and it is unlikely that Apple will provide this information. Since there are lot of people who prefer other applications over iTunes (think of the Linux users who cannot run iTunes), we hope that somebody will figure out how to calculate the iTunesDB signatures. We at MGTEK will do our own research on this, but we cannot promise a solution anytime soon.

If you are wondering whether MGTEK dopisp will work with these new iPods: We don't know yet because we don't have one of the new iPods yet! We have them on order and will check them out as soon we get our hands on them, but until then, we cannot promise that MGTEK dopisp will support these iPods, but we will do our best!
