Since most iPods uses a regular file system to store music, you have to make sure that you do not disconnect your iPod from your computer while the iPod is written to. If you disconnect your iPod while the file system is written to, the file system may become corrupted, and you will have to Restore your iPod to make it usable again.

You can disconnect the iPod when sync is completed and Windows Media Player displays ‘You can disconnect iPod’ in the sync pane. To safely disconnect the iPod at any time, use the procedure described below. To have MGTEK dopisp disconnect the iPod automatically after sync, see the topic Automatically eject iPod after Sync.

Note   Certain iPods may still display ‘Do not disconnect’ after you use the procedure below. This is caused by a firmware bug in the iPod software. If Windows tells you that it is safe to disconnect the hardware, you can safely ignore the message on the iPod screen and disconnect the iPod from your computer.

Disconnect your iPod

  1. In the Windows system tray (near the clock), click the Safely Remove Hardware icon.
  2. Click Safely remove Apple iPod.
  3. Wait until Windows tells you that it is safe to disconnect the hardware. If Windows tells you that the iPod is still being accessed, close all applications that may access the iPod and repeat steps 1 to 4.
  4. Unplug your iPod.
