You can have Windows Media Player sync your iPod automatically using Automatic Sync (formerly sync-partnership). Automatic sync allows you to set up a list of playlists that are automatically synced to your iPod when you connect your iPod and click Start Sync. During sync, Windows Media Player will add or remove music from your iPod so that it always contains the music from the playlists you selected.

Essentially, Automatic Sync will keep your iPod synchronized with the Windows Media Player library. Also, if you make changes to the metadata (such as title and album names) the changes will be applied to songs already on the iPod.

Windows Media Player sets up Automatic Sync automatically when you first connect your iPod. If you prefer to sync your iPod manually, you can turn off Automatic Sync as described below.

Setup Automatic Sync

  1. Start Windows Media Player, connect your iPod to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.
  2. From the tree-view to the left, right-click the iPod icon and click Set Up Sync.
  3. Click Sync this device automatically.
  4. Add or remove the playlists that you wish to sync automatically.

Disable Automatic Sync

  1. Start Windows Media Player, connect your iPod to your computer, and then click the Sync tab.
  2. In Windows Media Player 11: From the tree-view to the left, right-click the iPod icon and click End Sync Partnership.
  3. In Windows Media Player 12: From the tree-view to the left, right-click the iPod icon, select Options, and then click End Sync Partnership.
