Note   This article applies only to Windows Media Player 11 on Windows XP or Windows Vista. Windows 7 and Windows Media Player 12 have built-in support for MPEG-4 audio and video. Do not install these software packages if you have Windows Media Player 12 or higher.

If you wish to play AAC audio (.M4A) and MPEG-4 or H.264 encoded video (.MP4 or .M4V) using Windows Media Player 11, you need to install third-party software. After you install this software, you will also be able to sync MPEG-4 audio and video to your iPod.

In order to play MPEG-4 audio and video in Windows Media Player 11 you need:

There are several commercial vendors that offer these splitters and codecs. We do not make any recommendation on what codecs to use. Use your favorite search engine to find the required software. In order to display tag information embedded in MPEG-4 videos, you may want to install a tag extender, too.

We do not recommend installing codec packs as they are usually of poor quality and do permanent damage to your Windows installation.

Add MPEG-4 video support to Windows Media Player 11

Adding support for playing AAC audio and MPEG-4 video in Windows Media Player 11 is not a feature of MGTEK dopisp. The procedure below is merely a guide that outlines what you need to do.
