Links trails or breadcrumb trails are navigation aids that provide the user with the current location of a topic page in a hierarchal structure (i.e. the table of contents); as well as links that allow the user to navigate to the parent categories. Although the link trail is derived from the table of contents, it can provide additional orientation for the user, especially when the TOC is not available or hidden.

For instance, a typical link trail might look like this:

Books > Fiction Books > Poetry
